Angola: Official Calls For Free, Responsible Electoral Coverage

Luanda, 07/31 - The national director of Mass Media, José Luís de Matos, Thursday in Luanda urged journalists to exercise the activity with rigour, objectivity, impartiality and high sense of responsibility and patriotic duty.

During a conference about "Media Organs while electoral agents", held Thursday at the Training Centre of Journalists (Cefojor), the director said that by doing so journalists would contribute to free, fair and transparent legislative polls, set for next 05 September.

"The Mass Media Ministry, through Cefojor, has been carrying out countless training and informative activities on electoral and civic education issues, aimed at preparing properly the journalists so that they can play a key role in the democratic system", he said during a ceremony also attended by the directors of Angolan News Agency (ANGOP) and National Radio Station (RNA), Manuel da Conceição and Eduardo Magalhães, respectively.

In his view, with the training, journalists can develop their activities, within the civic and patriotic mobilisation of Angolan citizens, to participate in the process, with greater competence.

Media professionals should also contribute to the creation of an environment of peace and harmony before, during and after the elections.

The conference was jointly promoted by Cefojor, National Electoral Commission (CNE) and the Angolan Institute of Electoral System and Democracy (IASED).
